The lips are a great place to pierce and you can get many different type of lip piercing too, allowing you to best compliment your style. Initially it is advised that a labret stud or captive bead ring is the type of lip piercing jewellery to use, made from high-grade surgical stainless steel, implant-grade titanium or a similar lightweight metal. Whichever type of lip piercing you have, ensure the jewellery is oversized so that the swelling has space, once the lip has healed you can enjoy close fit jewellery.
Lip piercings can be found pretty much anywhere around the mouth, although the lip surface itself is not usually pierced, except in horizontal lip piercings and canine bites. Here is a list of the type of lip piercing you can have and where they are located:
• Monroe piercings – labret studs worn on the upper lip
• Medusa piercings – these go through the centre of the upper lip (the philtrum), perpendicular to the tissue
• Labret piercings – pierced with labret studs, these can be in the centre or off-centre
• Verticle labret – goes through the middle of the bottom lip, parallel to the tissue
• Verticle lowbret – starts inside the mouth between lower lip and teeth & travels straight down, exits lower edge of the jawline
• Horizontal piercings – these are very rare and use a horizontal bar on the lower lip which travels through the lip surface
• Dahila – located by the creases of the mouth

Lip Piercing Aftercare
So long as you take care to soak the lip two or three times a day in saline, blood and lymph discharge will be softened if it is attached to the jewellery. You can use a cotton swab to remove excess dirt from the piercing area, then slowly turn the jewellery you have in through the piercing to keep it slack. Alchohol free mouthwash is very good after meals, it helps to remove debris and flushes the piercing through.
Lip Piercing Healing
Most lip piercings heal somewhere between 3 and 10 weeks, some scar tissue may remain after healing but the fistula is usually fully developed and mostly healed.
