UV-Barbells

UV barbells are a great way to add a little colour to your piercings. These barbells are made of UV-reactive materials such as UV acrylic and PMMA. These materials are varieties of biological plastic and have two main advantages: UV glow and biocompatibility.

UV acrylic glows very brightly under UV light so UV barbells are perfect for nights out and clubbing. How brightly individual barbells glow depends mostly on colour – green UV jewellery always glows the brightest, followed by clear and red jewellery. In terms of biocompatibility, UV barbells are metal-free so that are perfect for sensitive piercings. If you are sensitive to certain metals or have worn cheap metal jewellery, switching to UV jewellery may help. Another benefit is that you can wear most UV barbells during hospital visits and X-rays.

Plain UV Barbells

Plain UV barbells combine are the simplest way to make your piercings stand out. These barbells come in a huge choice of colours that glow brightly and look amazing. Most of these UV barbells are also flexible, so they put less stress on your piercings. They look great under UV lights but if you want a subtler look, go for a clear UV barbell. Clear UV barbells look discrete during the day but glow violet under UV light – perfect for some secretly wild style.

Large Gauge UV Barbells

Large gauge UV barbells are a cheap, lightweight alternative to regular metal barbells. Once you get over 8mm you may find your piercings are being stretched by the weight of your barbell – not a problem with UV barbells! These bars are very light even at higher gauges, so you can maintain a gauge easily. They also have a nice soft feel and are very comfortable to wear.

UV Ball Barbells

These UV ball barbells allow you to make a statement whilst still using a metal bar. They come in a great choice UV designs and you can also swap the UV balls with other jewellery to create an endless variety of UV barbells. Another great option is UV threaded balls – just add them to your existing jewellery.

Whether you’ve got regular ear lobe piercings or an unusual ear cartilage piercing, there is a huge choice of ear piercing studs you can wear. Ear piercing studs are widely available in almost any design you can think of, so it’s easy to update your look, add a little sparkle or make a statement. Because of the shape of your ear, there are lots of different types of stud you can wear in ear piercings, from cute ear studs to funky body piercing jewellery.

Classic Stud Earrings

Classic stud earrings are the most common type of ear piercing stud. They have a butterfly back and are usually a very small gauge – either 0.8mm, 1mm or 1.2mm. This type of earring is usually very cheap but beware of ear piercing studs that are made of cheap metals. Some high street ear studs contain nickel that can really irritate your ears. We recommend looking for silver or steel ear posts which are much more biocompatible. It is also recommended that you only wear these stud earrings in ear lobe piercings – not cartilage piercings.

Labrets as Ear Piercing Studs

Although they were originally designed for lip piercings, labret studs make excellent ear piercing studs. The flat back plate of a labret sits neatly against the back of your ear and won’t poke your skin – this makes them very comfy for sleeping in. They are suitable for both ear lobe and ear cartilage piercings. We recommend surgical steel, titanium or BioFlex labret studs for your ears. They are also perfect for giving your ear lobes a chance to recover from being irritated by cheap stud earrings.

Small gauge barbells are very popular for small, petite piercings, especially facial piercings. Most piercings are done at 1.6mm (14g) so this is considered “standard gauge”. This means that anything under 1.6mm can be called a small gauge barbell. Barbells this small are suitable for nose piercings, ear piercings and lip piercings. They allow you to use very small piercings jewellery and have a discrete, delicate look to your piercings.

0.8mm / 20 Gauge Barbells

0.8mm is actually too small for most manufacturers and you are unlikely to find any small gauge barbells in 0.8mm. This gauge is mostly used for nose studs and nose rings. This partly because wearing a 0.8mm barbell in any other piercing would encourage the piercing to migrate – a very thin barbell offers little resistance and can be migrated and rejected by the body.

1mm / 18 Gauge Barbells

1mm is the smallest gauge that you can find barbells in. 1mm small gauge barbells are ideal for ear cartilage piercings, nose piercing and some lip piercings. These small barbells are also ideal for ear lobe piercings that were originally done with a piercing gun.

1.2mm / 16 Gauge Barbells

This is popular size for small gauge barbells and you can find a huge choice of small barbells in this gauge. 1.2mm barbells are commonly used for ear piercings, lip piercings and nose piercings – it is big enough to prevent migration yet still very small and discrete. These small gauge barbells are available in a wide choice of materials and can be customised with any threaded accessories you like.

Measuring your Barbell Bar

Barbell bars are measured in two places, the gauge (thickness) and length. The length of the barbell bar is measured between the two balls or accessories on each end, this is the area that corresponds to the distance between the two exit holes of your body piercing.
