Halloween contact lenses are the perfect way to complete your costume but even on Halloween, it is important to keep contact lens safety in mind. Halloween contact lenses are perfectly safe but they must be used and stored correctly, otherwise they could lead to irritation.
Taking care of your Halloween contact lenses is fairly easy – just follow some simple contact lens safety rules and you can eliminate any risk of eye irritation. Lots of people – myself included – will be wearing contact lenses to Halloween parties over the weekend so I am going to give you my contact lens safety guidelines. This post will tell you how to keep your eyes safe, care for your lenses and what to do with them when you get home from your Halloween party.
Contact Lens Safety Guidelines
The most important thing in contact lens safety is to keep your lenses clean and moist. To do this you really just need common sense – keep your lenses clean with contact lens solution, store them in a proper lens case and check your lenses regularly for damage or dirt. Below are my contact lens safety guidelines. All you will need to care for your contact lenses is a bottle of contact lens solution and a contact lens case – one case per pair of lenses. You can also use contact lens tweezers to pick up your lenses. This is not essential but they reduce the need to touch your lenses. They are also great for people with long nails – it is easy to rip a lens if you have long or artificial nails.
- Wash your hands!
- Rinse contact lenses in lens solution before and after wearing
- Inspect for lens rips etc
- Only use lens solution – water will damage lenses
- Store lenses in contact lens case filled with solution
- Never wear dirty, damaged or dry lenses
- Never share lenses with any one
- Do not wear lenses for more than 8 hours at a time
- Discard after lens life span – usually 3 months after lenses are opened
- Remove lenses if eyes become sore
- Seek medical attention if you cannot remove a lens
What To Do At The End Of Halloween
After your Halloween party or event you will need to remove and store your lenses. You can wear your lenses as many times as you like within their life span, as long as you store them correctly. All contact lenses have a life span, which is how long you can keep them for once you open them. Most Halloween contact lenses can be kept for 3 months but always check with the shop you purchased from. Contact lenses can only be worn for 8 hours at a time, so if you are going to be out for more than 8 hours on Halloween you must remove them after 8 hours. Whenever and wherever you remove your lenses, you will need to have a contact lens case and solution to hand. To remove and store your lenses for later follow these steps:
- Open the lens case and rinse it out with lens solution
- Use one hand to hold your eye open
- Remove the lens using a pinching action
- Place lenses in case – one lens per section of the case
- Fill lens case with solution
- Close case tightly
Your lenses are now safely stored away. The lens solution will remove any dirt and they are ready to wear again. If you want to wear them to a few different Halloween events on different days that is absolutely fine. If you are going to do this I recommend giving your eyes a break in between. E.g. if you are wearing lenses on Saturday and Sunday night, try not to wear eye make up during the day. Drink plenty of water to keep your eyes hydrated and stay away from smoky environments. As long as you follow these contact lens safety guidelines you can wear your lenses right through the party season – I plan on wearing mine for New Years too!
