If you want brightly coloured hair there’s only one name you need to know – Manic Panic. Manic Panic has been bringing brightly coloured hair to the world since 1977 and they’re my favourite way to dye my hair. Not only do their dyes give incredible saturated colour but they last ages, are vegan and leave my hair feeling gorgeous.
Manic Panic was started in NYC by two sisters called Tish and Snooky. At the time they were part of the band Blondie and decided to create amazing punk hair colours for themselves. They opened up a Manic Panic shop in New York and the rest as they say, is history! Thirty years later Manic Panic dyes are the original and still the best – there’s simply nothing else out there that’ll give you colours like Manic Panic.
Manic Panic Hair Colours
Manic Panic hair dye comes in a huge range of colours, including lots of variations to suit different skin tones. As a rule Manic Panic colours will work on both bleached and natural hair, but you’ll get different results. They come up beautifully bright on bleached hair and give a range of more subtle colours on darker hair colours. My advice is to look online and see what kind of results other people got – there are hundreds of Manic Panic reviews and tutorials all over the net. Some of the most popular Manic Panic colours are:
Prepare your hair for Manic Panic
If you want to get the “true†colour from a Manic Panic hair dye, you’ll need to bleach your hair first. Luckily they also make Manic Panic Flashlightning – a great bleaching kit. Flashlightning contains everything you need to pre-lighten your hair and is known for getting great results from even very dark hair. If you want to create coloured streaks or different shades with one Manic Panic colour, try applying Manic Panic over existing highlights, or use Flashlightning to create bleached streaks before you dye.
I also recommend shampooing and drying your hair before applying Manic Panic and intensively conditioning after. Shampoo opens up the hair cuticles to release dirt and grease. This makes the hair more porous and helps it to soak up the dye – it’s also the reason you need to use conditioner. Once you’ve washed out your dye use a good conditioner to smooth the hair and “seal in†the dye.
Manic Panic Amplified Hair Dye
Manic Panic uses a cream formula but recently they’ve release Manic Panic Amplified – a new longer lasting formula. The Amplified hair dyes last 30% longer than regular Manic Panic and give you exactly the same colour. I haven’t tried the Amplified hair dye yet but it sounds awesome – my favourite Manic Panic colours for longer! At the moment only the most popular colours are available in Amplified but more and more colours are being added gradually – just look for the silver Amplified logo.
